nifty turquoise

i gave you a little hint about my plans for this boring cabinet.
this little corner of our kitchen needed some attention.  it is quite dull.  i found some inspiration over at beyond the screen door designs.  i really loved her front door.  brave, isn't she?
i went to my local sherwin-williams and bought a quart of oil based primer, 'nifty turquoise' in latex and a quart of tinted glaze.  i will admit, i was a bit skeered when i first saw the color on the piece of furniture.
yeow-zer!  that is intense!

but i kept plugging along.  after one coat of primer and two coats of paint, i started layering on the glaze.  a little here, a brush stroke there, rub some off,  wax on, wax off {no wait, that's karate kid}.

i am still mastering the photography skills so forgive the not so fabulous photos.  here's the full frontal:
i love her.  i love nifty turquoise.  i was so excited to move her back into the kitchen that i haven't even topcoated the piece.  i will do that this weekend but i was so excited to see how she looked in her new outfit.  i'm trying to decide if her new outfit requires new earring {i.e. hardware}.  we'll see.

i've got a few plans for the wall decor above it.  but first, i must topcoat.  otherwise, i will move on to the next project never to return.  i know myself and my lack of attention span!

hope you like nifty!

Speaking of how you felt with the first coat of paint, imagine how I felt before I put the glaze on my door! I was more than a little scared!
Thank you for featuring my door! I'm so glad you were inspired and able to take the idea and color and make it your own!

  8. Cute!! Love the color! I'm about to do something similar to a little side table, but I can't decide between turquoise or a more muted gray. I'd love to see you on my linky party going on all weekend!

  10. It looks great. I am attempting purple this weekend. Hope it turns out as good as yours. The only problem is there is no place in Orillia that sells glaze. How awful is that?

    1. cindy-
i had it mixed at sherwin williams. unfortunately, there is not a formula. i just asked the store associate to mix a brown glaze and he customized it. honestly, i was nervous about it. when in the can, it looks olive green.
love the idea of painting a headboard in turquoise!

  19. Did you get the Nifty Turquoise in it's full color or did you lighten it by a percentage, such as 25% or 50%? My son wants a turquoise room and that seems a bit much for the walls. Just curious to know if what I see here would be what I'd be getting (minus the tint of course!). Thanks!

    1. amy- the paint color was full strength and it was intense. i toned it down with glaze but you can't do that on walls.

i did a focal wall in my daughter's room in teal and then the other walls in cream. you could do turq/cream or turq/light grey in your son's. also, it helps to paint the focal wall first to see how you feel about the color. if you love it, go for it and paint all 4 walls. if not, play it safe and paint the other 3 a neutral color. check out the link below. good luck and thanks for stopping by!
